Here’s announcing that the book selected for our next discussion meeting is Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race by Debby Irving. Here’s what it says at about the book: Irving began her career “in a variety of urban performance-art and community-based non-profits, where she repeatedly found that her best efforts to “help” caused more harm than the good she intended. Her one-step-forward-two-steps-back experience or racial understanding eventually led her to dig deeply into her own white privilege, where she found truths she never knew existed. “Waking Up White” describes that journey and the lessons learned along the way.”

This is a powerful, yet very readable book. As Irving discovers, good intentions and silence about the systemic racism imbedded in our culture and country will not overcome centuries of racial injustice. There’s something for everyone to learn and discover in this book.

If you would like Rev. Crimmins to order a copy for you, please mention to her or sign your name on the signup sheet located in the narthex. Currently, the books are listed for $11.89 on Amazon. Amazon also has available an audio version of the book.

The book will be discussed here at First Pres on Tuesday, June 20 at 7 p.m. Hope you will join us!
